“Intra”Connection - The Power Within

Intraconnection is how efficiently energy moves within a single unit, like through your body. It's the seamless, silent, and powerful way your muscles work together as a single, coordinated unit to generate force.

This is where the magic of a truly elite stroke happens. We can think of this as the application of muscles being tight within the body, which is a function of your muscular system. However, if we think about paddling as an energy transfer, we realize that not only do we have to keep our muscles tight, but we must also use that energy to move the boat forward. This is where the concept of intraconnection really matters. By focusing on this internal energy transfer, we can move the boat much more efficiently.

The Power of a Unified Body

The most important part of intraconnection is the seamless muscle progression from your core, through your arms, and into your legs. From fingers to toes. This is why a paddler who understands energy transfer can be much faster than someone who is simply stronger. It's the difference between disjointed movements and a unified, explosive motion that converts muscular energy to kinetic energy.

The Complete Picture

A truly powerful paddling stroke requires different types of connection working together. This type of connection which I call “intraconnection” —is a flawless muscle progression— energy will leak and dissipate, rather than contribute to forward movement. You might have a great feel for the water, but if your intraconnection is poor (from a weak core or uncoordinated movements), you can't fully use that connection.

So, next time you're on the water, think beyond just "efficiency." Focus on connection and the smooth flow of energy within your own body (intraconnection) to unlock a more powerful stroke.
